AEA R84 Ribbon Microphone

Sometime after beginning to build the AEA 44-C (the one that looks like an old RCA 44-B) Wes Dooley and the crew at AEA took their incredible knowledge of the design and manufacture of ribbon microphones and created the R-84. With the improvements in technology since the 30's and 40's they were able to build a ribbon microphone that could take loud guitars and still sound reminiscent of an old RCA 77-DX. The real beauty of this beast is that by employing these technological advances [let's face it, computer design in the 1930's was at best arcane!!] the folks at AEA created a wonderful sounding mic that just about every engineer can afford, while sounding far more expensive than the price tag would suggest. The R84 is one of the most "all purpose" ribbon mics at Mercenary's studio.

Using everything AEA learned by remanufacting RCA 44, theywent back to the drawing board, re-engineering it to create a whole new mic. With the improvements in technology since the thirties and forties, they decided to redesign the entire package to be more efficient, lighter and less expensive. The only thing that remains unchanged is the New Old-Stock RCA 44 ribbon material.

Pure and true, it is remarkably free of distortion. Just as versatile as its venerable father, it flatters voice, strings, brass and drums.

"DJV" Option: This option provides more wind protection and less bass for close up vocal use; an excellent option for voice over artists. This is for the option only, not the mic. You should plan on a few extra days for delivery as we don't stock the R84 with options. If you have questions, or need one in a pinch let us know and we'll see what we can work out.

"The AEA R-84 "DJV" model is one of the best VO mics I've heard in years! It's a ribbon mic with a different grade/gauge [I dunno, I'm not a fabrics guy] silk on the inside of the basket... the net result is a microphone that has a very silky [no pun intended] high end, and a very creamy bottom characteristic." - Fletcher

More wind protection and less bass for close up DJ and vocal use.
